Cellulite is a term that is used to describe fat deposits under the skin that give the skin a dimpled, or orange-peel like appearance. On the surface of the skin the bulging provides the dimply appearance of cellulite, especially in areas such as the hips, buttocks or thighs. Cellulite is an effect created by connective tissue filled with fat, and it can be reduced by diet and exercise.
A common myth about the condition is that it is caused by being overweight but recently it’s been shown that many people who have high fitness also have this problem. The condition mostly occurs in females and women over the age of 30 are most at risk. The cottage cheese appearance or multiple dimples on the skin occurs in over 90% of post pubescent women. Due to different body physiques, men tend to have lower percentages of body fat, while women have higher percentages.
Cellulite is a result of a slow down in blood flow, lymphatic drainage, fat, a breakdown of connective tissues and hormones that regulate these changes. It is not a health risk, but simply a condition of the skin normally caused by hormonal factors such as estrogen. Cellulite is a skin condition seen commonly in the hips, thighs, and buttocks.
One school of thought is that the condition is caused by a combination of hormones (namely, estrogen) and physiology (connective tissues over cellulite do not form a smooth surface). Cellulite is not a sign of physical disease. Cellulite is caused by a buildup of fats and toxins underneath the skin. As the skin loses elasticity, the excess fats and toxins work to form those marks that we all can recognize.

Liposuction cannot reduce cellulite nor can dieting but a balanced diet, drinking and exercising helps. A good option is to get fit and get rid of cellulite. One can fight cellulite or at least the appearance of cellulite. Liposuction and Mesotherapy - injections of various chemicals such as phosphatidlycholine into the skin to disperse fat - have also proven a bust. Liposuction is a serious surgical procedure that involves a potentially painful recovery and risks of rare but serious complications. Liposuction cannot serve as a substitute for dieting and exercise nor can it effectively treat stretch marks or cellulite.
Endermologie has been used as a treatment for cellulite reduction and skin toning. Endermologie, a mechanical roller massage therapy that claimed to iron out cellulite, was found to have no long-term benefits in a recent study published in the ASAPS journal. One of the latest products to come on the market is a pair of jeans from the clothing store Miss Sixty, which contain capsules of a cream made from shellfish. Endermologie is a pricy French treatment in which massaging rollers are applied to problem areas of the skin in an effort to remove the dimpling. Some people like the results while others have found that the improved appearance is temporary.
